Chapter 51
Axel woke to the sensation of a furry thing on his face. In panic, he grabbed it and had nearly flung it far away when it yelped
from the shock. He halted. immediately. The creature was the small dog from the previous night. The dog scurried to the floor,
looking up at Axel and wagging its tail continuously. Then, after a moment, it suddenly stopped. Axel had walked away to get
breakfast. started. Upon returning, the smell of the room had changed, a weird stench was now in place.
Seeing the puppy at the other end now chewing his inside house sl*ppers, Axel marched towards it. The moment he stepped
forward, he stepped into a pile that had a weird texture. Poop! He let out a painful groan while standing there. The poop had
plastered to the floor, staining his pristine carpet.
“Darn it!” He cursed at the dog furiously. “I’ve had it. Immediately after breakfast, I’m dumping you somewhere.” He swore,
fuming. Immediately, he went into full clean mode, donning a pair of gloves and a mask. He grabbed and threw the sl*ppers and
the stockings into the trash, then threw out the carpet as well. Then also went ahead spraying disinfectant everywhere in the
house. After almost retching while cleaning the dog’s mess, he finally succeeded. Finally satisfied, he washed his hands and
then tossed everything in the trash. Then he headed to the bathroom immediately. Through all of this, he had forgotten the bacon
he left on the gas. His automatic air fryer and most kitchen equipment had already been moved. The scent of burning meat
wafted to him in the bathroom. Running out with a towel around his waist, he bumped into and almost stepped on the dog. While
avoiding the dog, he slid and fell right on his butt. With a painful groan, he got up, turning off the already burnt and darkened
food.
He gave an exasperated sigh. That was the last food he has at home. The only thing left in the fridge was water.
After putting on clothes, he sat on a chair, browsing for restaurants close by, one that had options and a menu for a dog as well.
“Might as well give you a treat for the last time,” he mused to himself. Wearing casual clothes, Axel headed out. After breakfast
at a cafe that could cater to pets as well, they both headed off to the animal shelter.
“I’m very sorry. But we can’t take any more dogs at this time,” the woman at the front desk pleaded. “What?! But this is a shelter.
Axel sighed in frustration. “Just take the darn dog!” Axel almost yelled.
A woman came out from inside the other room. She was round with a lovely smile, her glasses perched on her nose. Her
clothes, however, were poorly combined. Although neat, they were mismatched. “Is something the matter?” She asked.
“Listen. This isn’t my dog. I found it outside last night.”.

“Yes, it is. Lots of abandoned animals have been abandoned recently. Or he could

have gotten lost. The little baby,” the woman cooed while scratching the puppy’s head.

“Well, this is an animal shelter; I came here to drop this dog off here,” Axel stated. “Where did you find this darling?” The woman
asked, clearly distracted by the puppy.
“Right outside my door,” Axel gritted, losing his patience.
“Did the dog walk up to you?” She questioned.
“Something like that... What does it matter?!” Axel asked.
“Well, that’s how I found all of my six pets. Right outside my front door. It clearly shows this little guy here liked and trusted you.
Dogs sometimes find their owners. The woman smiled widely.
“I don’t want the dog,” Axel emphasized each word through gritted teeth, his annoyance and patience running thin. The woman
was so bubbly and happy. She had six pets?! Axel wondered. Her image fit in with it; she looked like the typical neighborhood cat
lady.
“Let’s see here.” The woman stretched out, holding the dog. It wagged its tail but still kept glancing back to Axel like a baby
looking for its mom. The woman sighed thoughtfully.
“Look. I’ll pay you.” Axel offered, bringing out his wallet. His gold platinum card stuck out as he made those movements.

“Listen, sir. We have no space right now for an extra dog. If you don’t mind, could you wait for two weeks? We’ll be able to find a
home for this dog immediately.” She offered.
“What?!” Axel asked, fuming. “Just have someone take him right now.”
“We can’t just give this to just anyb*dy.”
“Oh, please how hard could it be?” Axel asked.
“What if they’re abusive? We’ve gotten dogs here in serious situations. That dog over there suffered trauma from its previous
owners; he was used as a stone throw target. The other one there; the woman said, pointing. “Was hurled outside in the snow.
These dogs have gone through several horrifying things in the hands of humans. There’re so many of them here like that. This
puppy needs a home, one we have to carefully search for.” The woman stated firmly.
Axel had a complex look on his face as he stared at the puppy. Although it was annoying, the thought of the dog being abused
and kicked around or starved. didn’t sit well with him. Some dogs there just sat quietly, their eyes hollowed and sad. It dawned
on him; animals suffer trauma and abuses too. He gave a long sigh. “I’m extremely busy and rarely at home. Even on most
weekends, you said it yourself, this dog needs a home. I don’t have that. All I have is a building and my
work.”

“That will have to do for now. At least until we find someone who really needs a puppy,” the woman said hopefully. “In the
meantime, you’ll need to get a collar, for when you go out in walks, some pillows or blankets for him to sleep on. And shop for

some dog food. He doesn’t need much. Just your time and attention.” As the woman spoke, she was leading

him outside of the shelter and back to his car with the dog in his arms. “I don’t have time,” Axel said with a sigh. “You’ll do just
fine. You’ll see. The woman encouraged. “I’ll get back to you when we’ve found a home for him.” She assured. Axel deposited
the dog in the back of the car then brought out his contact card passing it to the woman. “Have you thought of a name yet?” She
asked.
“No. I won’t be having it for long anyway.” With that, he got into his car and drove off. The woman stood there with a satisfied
look on her face. “Miss Cherry. Why did you ask me to tell him we couldn’t accommodate more pets. Surely we could have taken
that one. Her assistant inquired.
“We’ll save that spot for dogs that need rescuing. I could tell that little puppy is in safe hands. The dog chose him himself,” she
said chuckling lightly. “He seems cold. and aloof, but that’s a man who needs something to channel his attention and love. He’s
rich but empty, in need of company. They need each other those two. We just need to give him time to see it. Still, we’ll find a
well–fitting home for the puppy. Hopefully, we won’t be needing it.” The woman added with a sigh. Driving off, Axel kept glancing
at the mirror towards the backseat. The dog had settled into the blanket and was now sleeping peacefully. At the shelter, it had
seemed anxious, almost frightened, as if it could tell it was about to be dumped off there.
“A dog, I don’t have time in my life for a pet, Axel mused to himself. The thought of going to another shelter crossed his mind, but
after checking the address and discovering it was a two–hour drive, he gave up. No wonder the animal shelter here was
overfilled. He made a mental note to stop by a pet store to get whatever would be necessary for the dog.
Still, a small part of him was relieved. His strict and rigorously structured lifestyle, accustomed to for years, had now changed
suddenly. The dog had somehow brought in a strange twist, sparking something within him he never knew existed, much like
that woman at the Exhibition had. Concern, care, pity those emotions used to be strange to him. His thoughts were interrupted
by the vibrating of his phone.
“Yes,” he answered calmly. The voice at the other end informed him that his apartment was now completely set, and everything
had been moved in. All that was left was for him to check everything out. Changing course, he headed straight to the heart of the
city where his new apartment was. Dog in arm, he made his way through the elevator. Outside his apartment, he inserted his key
code, the door beeped, and then opened, giving him access.
The sight he was greeted with, however, made him question his sanity. A b*dy.

outline lay on his sofa. Eyebrows raised in question, he stealthily made his way to the intruding figure, ready to rouse him in. His
thoughts went to one of the laborers; they might have worked and fallen asleep there. As he got closer, the b*dy frame became
clearer. The outline of a woman? He studied her quietly, irritation tilling his entire being. He grabbed his phone ready to call the
building security; in that moment, the lady tossed in her sleep. Her long hair was tousled to the other side of her face, revealing a
small captivating face with delicate features. Axel froze. She was familiar, so familiar. The lady from the exhibition. He nearly
laughed out loud. Since that morning, his thoughts had been trailing off towards her, and now it was so bad that he had
summoned her in his mind. Calmly he took off his glasses, expecting the illusion in front of him to vanish. Just then she groaned
softly, the sound reverberated through the quiet house. The woman he’d seen the previous night was right in his new apartment!
